I’m not artistic at all, but when I first heard about bullet journals, I wanted to find out more.
I obviously started my search on Pinterest and found The Petite Planner. I was so inspired that I found the notebook that I had received at a Bumble bloggers event, and started my bullet journal right there and then.
I found a few videos on YouTube and decided to try it myself. I’m still learning how to do this but I wanted to share what I’ve learned so far and to give you the confidence to start your own.
Background of Bullet Journal
The original Bullet Journal (or BuJo for short) was started by Ryder Carroll, an American product designer, who needed something that was quick and kept up with the notes he was writing.
Trial and error meant that it quickly evolved into what we know and love now.

In My First Bullet Journal
My first few pages are my Yearlies. Yearlies are where you can see your year at a glance. You can do it as a calendar
I decided to put two months on each page so I could see it easily (not that anything exciting is happening!)
As the name suggests, this is where you put your page numbers and index your bullet journal. Every time you add a new page, add it to the index. This’ll really help if you have a big journal and want to see a specific page.
Books To Read
One of my challenges this year is to read as much as possible. I’ve tried everything; putting my books on Instagram to make myself liable, I’ve tried treating myself for every chapter read and nothing is helping.
I thought that by writing them in my BuJo, where only I can see my progress, that I wouldn’t feel pressured to do it. I’ll let you know how it goes!
Weight To Lose
As someone who struggles with disordered eating, I was worried that this would snowball.
I made sure that the goal weight I put on there was a healthy weight for me and I’ve made sure to put it in the Yearlies section so I can do it over a few months.
I love collecting quotes. Whenever I feel like I’m failing, or I’m starting to lose my way, quotes always help. Here are a few of my favourites:
- Aim for the moon. If you miss, you still land amongst the stars.
- Whether you think you can or can’t, you’re right.
Mental Health Tracker
If you read my post a little while ago about my mental health, you’ll see that it’s really important for me to track how I’m feeling.
I used a template by The Petite Planner and made my own colour system, but there are some really good ideas on Pinterest if this is something you want to try.
I can already see that I’ve been a bit unrealistic with this one. I’ve only put in negative emotions when I should’ve put in a wider range to include happy, optimistic, excited etc. I’ve run out of space now but I love the layout I have.
I’m planning on adding a lot more to my bullet journal – I even thought about buying a separate one to create loads of spreads.
Now I’ve discovered bullet journals, I want to draw LOADS of different spreads and trackers to see how they all work, but you can’t really put random trackers everywhere (or can you…)!!
I plan on creating a ‘How To Start Your Bullet Journal’ post to help you create your own, who knows, I might even create some printables (if I can work out how to do that!!)
