Is Journalling Just For Kids?

Firstly, heck no. I’m just going to answer that straight away. Journalling isn’t just for kids.

Long gone are the days where you would sit in a room with a counsellor and they would tell you to write down your feelings. I was a typical angsty 14 year old when I first started a journal. Looking back on it now, there was definitely a reason why I was in therapy but that’s for another story.

Journalling is such a relaxing experience that I’d encourage everyone to try it! Whether you’re a Boss babe kicking butt in business, or a manager in charge of a big team, or a single parent trying to raise your kids the right way, or a teenager trying to navigate life, journalling will help in some way.

Why Journalling?

Did you know that swearing is an effective pain relief when you stub your toe? (I’m sure I heard that somewhere, if not, it sounds like a pretty fun experiment.) It gives your brain a way to make sense of the pain and gives you a way to express how much it blinking hurt. Not as much as stepping on a plug, but it really blooming hurts.

Journalling is kinda the same thing. When you have so much on your mind, you need something to help express everything.

I studied English and Creative Writing at university and was encouraged to start Free Writing. This is when you put your pen to paper, switch off your brain and just let words flow onto the page.

It’s really tricky at first, I found myself worrying about what I was writing, if it was the write way of doing it, if it was as good as other people’s…. But the best part is that all the words that leak onto the page are the random thoughts that are jumbled in your brain.

When you read through your Free Writing, you pick up words and themes and it gives you a way to dig through the chaos.

How To Start Journalling

Like I said, I started when I was about 14 and I was going through a lot of stuff. I would sit in bed with My Chemical Romance on repeat and I would be so dramatic while I was writing.

I would write about my day, my problems, my thoughts, the problems I thought I would have if an impossible situation happened…

All you need is a notebook and a pen. Go somewhere quiet and put your pen on the paper. You’ll probably sit there for a while wandering what the heck to write, but it’ll come to you. If not, here are some journal prompts for you.

  • Tomorrow, I really want…
  • If I could meet a celebrity, it would be…
  • What was the funniest thing to happen this week?

These are just a couple to get you started, you could even do a ‘line a day’ which is really popular within the bujo community.

It’s simple, you just write one sentence every single day. It doesn’t matter if you write “nothing interesting happened today” or “I keep forgetting to do this”, the important thing is to just write something.
